Car Safety for Your Pets
In a recent study, AAA found that loose objects and pets were the third worst distraction for drivers. Pets that are not restrained can become a dangerous distraction while driving. They can become excited and jump around or bark, which is a major distraction to a driver. Even if your dog is calm and sits quietly in the seat, what would happen if you had to suddenly break or got into an accident? If your pet is unrestrained this could cause serious injury or death. For these reasons always safely restrain your pet in your car at all times while you are traveling.
A car harness for dogs that is made specifically for canine travel is the best way to restrain your dog while traveling. Conventional seat belts are designed exclusively to protect people and while crates stop your pet from roaming around your car, they do not offer any protection in an accident. Dog harnesses are a series of straps and buckles that fasten to a car safety belt to restrain your pet like a normal Seat Belt. A good car harness should retain your dog around the body and neck and should be made of nylon. Always choose a harness that is comfortable for your dog and make sure that they are still able to sit, stand, and lie down while strapped in. Also make sure that the buckles won’t pull on your dog’s fur or get caught in it.
Like all new things, a harness is something that your dog will have to adjust to over time. If you are planning on taking your dog on a long car trip, you should make a few brief trips beforehand to introduce the harness and give your dog time to get used to it. Once your pet becomes accustomed to the dog harness, car rides will be both pleasant and safe and you both will be protected if an accident occurs.
